THE LAST OF THIS YEAR'S LEAVES

The last green leaf on a tree against a very blue sky
November 8th 2012

I've included this crop from the picture above because one of the things I like about plants and trees is that that they are a symbol of confidence. Hopefully, you'll be able to see next year's leaf buds already in place - as they should be. This branch is towards the top of the tree, right on the edge of the sea where it will be blasted by the cold, salty, east winds of winter but, short of disaster, the buds will survive. Next summer, the tree's crown will be bushy and green. We tend to associate new leaves with spring but they are ready and waiting now. It reminds me of the grasshopper and the ant / town mouse, country mouse tales - only less moralistic, simply fact.

It always amazes me that the potential new growth is already in place before the last leaf has dropped. Gives me hope, every year.
