Nothing subtle. The path has slipped and cracked. The undergrowth is encroaching from the right - so what is straight on now is different from where straight on was when the road signs were last painted. If you followed the faded pointer, you'd land up in gorse and blackthorn. (Not that this is really a pointer, it's more a divider but it amounts to the same thing in this context.)
