SUSPENDED ABOVE REFLECTIONS AND SUBMERGED STONES

Dead and fallen autumn leaves caught in branches over river - reflections on surface, stones under water

November 17th 2012

I don't usually interfere with my photos but I confess to tinting this a little so you can see stones on the bottom of the river as well as leaves caught in branches and reflections of trees round about.

This is beautiful! There is a certain eerie but calming quality about this photo. I love the twigs and their reflection on the water's surface.

Looks wonderful Lucy, good choice on your part, the glimpse of stones under the water adds an extra dimension to the shot.
P.s. you would like Perth I'm sure, its not a big city by comparison to many. Smaller and friendlier.

You did well with the tinting - made a whole lot of difference. Well done!

PS Have you tried a polarization filter for this kind of work?

Beautifully done Lucy.

I think you tweaked it perfectly!

FYI, a circular polarizer filter will allow you to adjust the amount of reflection the camera will see, so you adjust how much under the water you can see. It will also deepen colors, especially the sky.

Hello Sreisaat. I agree about the eerieness and the calmness - that's exactly how it was when I was there - but a friendly atmosphere too. I felt perfectly content. And - thank you for your helpful email and information and advice. It truly appreciate it.

Hello Perth DP. I confess I wasn't really thinking of the stones when I took the photo. I was aware they were there but was more concentrating on the leaves. It was only when I got home I noticed the they had got in on the act - and was pleased. Perth . . Being in a town is certainly different from viewing it from the outside - and your photo makes it look very big-cityish and busy and dramatic!

Hello Rune and Wayne - I haven't tried filters. I was interested when adjusting the tint (not being used to it) that the stones showed up better but the leaves have stayed the same colour. They are as I saw them. As for the sky (none in this picture, only water) for the most part, here, the trouble I have with sky is that it is often so deep it is almost unbelievable. Of course we have grey days - and it was very dull when I took this picture - but when the sky is blue here, my, it is blue. (Rune, I guess this is a similar pattern where you live?)

Toffeeapple - thanks. Mind. these woods are so beautiful, it would be hard to make anything turn out not well as long as the light reaches the lens. Under the trees, it can be quite dark and, although a lot are deciduous and loosing their leaves (expect the last have dropped this week) there are a lot of pine and yew trees too.
